It’s
common knowledge that Lady Gaga is not a guilty pleasure for me, but
someone I’m quite happy to enjoy. She’s just addictive to me. On the
upside, there are plenty of reasons to not feel guilt for loving her.
There are certain days when listening to something that just
inexplicably makes you happy is enough. And completely necessary.
Then,
there’s her truly smashing business sense. You’ve got to be a strong,
powerful, and savvy person to orchestrate such a meteoric rise in such a
short time. So I went and compiled a list of five business pointers we
could all stand to take from Gaga. Love her or hate her, the advice is
indisputably sound.
I have to give credit where it’s due. EZAsset beat me to this. But they didn’t cover all the bases on this topic, so I’m here to finish it off:
- Have a point of view.
God, does she ever. And it’s so essential. People. Listen up.
Especially in an economy like this, whether you’re seeking that perfect
job or you’re an entrepreneur who needs to NAIL this pitch and snag
another client, you’ve got to really have something to say, and you’ve
got to stand behind it. Your audience can sniff out wishy-washy a mile
away. I’m reminded of another of my pop-culture pleasures, Project
Runway. The designer with an “off” design who gets voted off is almost
never the one who took a risky idea and ran with it. The designer who
plays it safe is the one who gets the ax. Because forgettable gets you
nowhere.
- Do what you say you’re going to do.
Lots of people say “I’m going to be a star.” She did whatever it took to
make that happen. That takes a lot of thoughtful pushing. A lot of
falling down, getting back up, adjusting your strategy, and pushing some
more. Eyes up, focus on the goal, and persevere. It’s not just a
perseverance thing, though; it’s an integrity thing. If it’s a promise
you don’t know if you can keep, don’t make it. Stretch yourself, not the
truth.
-It’s not always about inventing the wheel.
Gaga isn’t breaking any ground musically. All she’s done is take a
niche of the dance-music genre and make it indisputably her own. I’m all
about being super awesome and covering new ground. But if you have an
interest that already exists, why not run with it? Take a concept you
like, improve on it, become the best and most memorable at it. (Although
if you’re going to take inspiration from a predecessor, just be
inspired. Don’t crib off the exact same song.)
- Be a team-builder.
My favorite thing about Gaga isn’t her musicality, her sassy style, or
her larger-than-life attitude. It’s the way she has with choosing the
right people, or creating the right combinations of people. Red One. Her
Haus of Gaga team. I don’t really like Beyonce much, and I didn’t
expect much of that collaboration, but she knew it was the way to go,
and y’know what? They made something great together.
Nobody is an island. The ability to form just the right creative team
that gets stuff done impeccably is a fabulous talent, and skill that we
should all work to develop.
- Be gracious.
Give thanks when they’re due, every time they’re due. In the business
world, this means things like sending a real, snail-mail thank-you note
after an interview, or remembering something important to your contacts
such as a birthday or anniversary, or being generous with referrals. Or
having a flexible return policy. For Lady Gaga, it’s being fabulous to
her fan base. She’s sent them thousands of dollars worth of pizza while
they waited for her to get to a signing, sent support one-on-one to fans
in need via Twitter, and worked tirelessly to help out one of her best
supporter networks, the gay community. (I’m still in love with her for
her speech at the National Equality march!) Just be excellent to the people in your business life, whatever that business consists of.
Whether
or not you’re one of Gaga’s Little Monsters, these are some good tips
to take from her interesting persona. Go forth, be bold, be real, and
make magic happen!

I resolve to...
1) Stop being mean to my body to get to a certain size, feed it good healthy things and exercise 'cause I love it and want to care for it.
2) Stop tearing down women's bodies/clothing, or being jealous, in my head or out loud. Be positive toward myself and other women.
3) stop using ableist language like 'retarded' and 'lame.'
4) write at least 15 minutes daily.
5) become more minimalist in my ownership and consumption. Spend my time and money on doing things, not owning things.
And finally... get moved to Indianapolis or another mid-to-large city, and into a job where I can pay the bills comfortably AND not be underutilized and/or bored!

Music Monday: I don't mind this wasted daylight
I'm not sure if this song is about what I want it to be about or not. I want it to be about that delightful lazy experience of spending a whole day cuddling in bed with someone you love.
Based on the lyrics, though, it's hard to tell if it's about that or if it's about a particularly bad depressive day, the kind where you can't even be arsed to care enough to get out of bed and you have nowhere to be anyway. I hope it's about love. Either way, it's been appropriate to my feelings and desires lately, and I've basically been in love with it ever since it was released years ago.

Stare the emptiness down until it blinks.

| My tacky Christmas outfit, let me show you it! I'm so good at hiding the fact I'm inches away from tears. |
Today was the date was going to get married.
I was going to spend one night this weekend in Bloomington with my FWB-guy-thing, and the other in Indianapolis, stomping around with my goth friends and then traipsing into Greg’s to meet one of my favorite drag queens, Sharon Needles. That did not happen. (Love you, my darling Queen of Darkness! Our day will come!) Meanwhile, I can squeal over the fantastic photo that my friend Kiki got with Her Dark Loveliness. Friends don’t get jealous, y’alll. Friends get happy for each other’s triumphs.
What I did instead was chow on a baked potato smothered in fajita fixins, followed by my grandma’s delicious homemade peppermint bark, and sit on the couch with my mother watching TRULY AWFUL made-for-TV Christmas movies. It’s the kind of Christmas magic that storybooks only wish they could come up with, y’all. I felt a little put out with Mom initially, because she totally guilt-tripped me into spending the weekend with my family instead of with drag queens! But it was the right thing to do, because I do have to work on Christmas and I really do (surprisingly) love my family even more than genderbending, glitter, big hair, and bawdy jokes.
Then I came back from my parents’ and, forsooth, got mine fine self straight over to Ye Goodwill to prepare for my friend Augie’s tacky Christmas sweater party. We dined on cheap pizza, Skittles vodka, and in my case, Diet Pepsi mixed with Jim Beam. And I didn’t get well and truly slammed, because I basically never let myself do that anymore, and besides, there was pizza to keep from being knocked to the floor, and some of the less-moderate folks among us needed led to the bathroom to pay homage to the Porcelain Throne, or else be cleaned up if they didn’t quite make it there. I play a spectacular Party Mommy. Your drunk butt ain’t going to find your car keys if I’m around.
Well, around then is the part of the evening where I said something offensive to Augie’s sister (I meant to be helpful! Really!) because she had quadraboob going on. Well, she did. And I care about her, and she’d really have benefited that evening from a proper fit and support. She called me awful things, and I had enough drink in me that it set me off crying. And I couldn’t make myself stop. I was that squalling idiot who I take care of at parties. The one I used to be, which is pretty much why I barely drink at all these days.
I’d pushed it very hard into the back of my head, as close to forgetting it as possible. What this weekend would have been if I’d failed to realize what I did this past June, which is that I was settling. Hard. Yes, I loved the guy, but he was not The Guy and I was just trying to assuage that same fear that’d motivated me to bounce from boyfriend to boyfriend, with maybe a few weeks in between, for THIRTEEN YEARS. Nearly half my life! Nearly half, I’ve wasted on men and on boys who were all beneath me and not even a tiny bit worth all the fuss. Because I was so afraid of being unloved and alone. I’d traipse off with the first marginally attractive dude who paid me positive attention. (Nevermind the fact it took such a short time to garner some damn positive attention every time! The craziness in my head can’t be reasoned with so easily!)
It was that emptiness that was born when my Dad fell out of love with Mom, and left us and got a whole new family with a daughter my age, but prettier, and he paid more attention to her than me. And God bless my Mom, I’m still so proud of her for telling him to quit cheating, to choose his family or to hit the road! I’m so proud of her for being so brave. But he didn’t choose her. He didn’t choose us.
And to this day it takes the smallest of things to turn me back into that six year old girl whose classmates made fun of for crying so easily, because she was so full of an emptiness she didn’t understand. Or the thirteen-year-old who couldn’t even put away the clean dishes without carefully selecting which knife would help end her life, if she would just stop being such a big chicken baby and do it already.
It’s the emptiness that I fell to at 17, when ***** punched out a window because I wouldn’t go down on him, and I pulled shards of glass out of his hand and bandaged him up and didn’t leave him. The emptiness I feared returning to so badly that I let ***** lie, and cheat, and lie some more and we weren’t over until he decided we were. And then maybe a week after he left me a sobbing mess in the front lawn outside my dorm, and I had to literally be dragged back inside by several girls from my floor, I latched onto some other guy that it took me years to get over even though we really only dated for, like, four months.
The mere fact I’ve been single for several months is a victory in itself.
There, in the corner of Augie’s living room, that empty dark fear swooped down on me again, and stared into me, and I was the first to blink. This fear is the monster I try to ignore on most days so I can get some work done. I usually lose. In the wee hours of this morning, I fought the monster. I lost again. I freakin’ lost it. I sobbed, I wailed, people tried to cuddle me, people brought me paper towels to mop up the trails of mascara I was dribbling everywhere. People were generally sweet and perfect to me even though I was bringing the drama in an otherwise successful party experience. I cried til I was sober again, then drove myself home and put myself to bed and kept crying the whole time. I boo-hooed on the phone to Augie and to my FWB until, oh, probably close to 3 a.m.
I lost bigtime. I let that inner darkness bat me around like a cat with a stuffed toy.
I want to hope this was the last time I break, but it probably won’t be.
This wasn’t remnants of mourning for my marriage that won’t happen today. It was deep soul-shaking fear of being alone and unloved forever. It’s the fear that I suspect has kept me from really making a whole lot of myself and my own potential. I kept limiting myself and my career, geographically, for some dude or another. Enough! This is the year that shit stops! Sure, Zach isn’t a bad guy, and I really did love him, and that can’t just be swept out and forgotten like last night’s bottles and pizza crusts. But if he was the right one, I believe I should have felt freer, not limited. It wouldn’t have felt like a five-ton weight was off me as soon as I broke up with him.
Someday, hopefully soon, I won’t lose. Some day that dark, empty monster within me will realize it can’t lie to me and get away with it anymore, because I shine so brightly that it’s revealed just how empty and how bullshit this puffed up, prickly pack of lies really is.
In the words of one of my favorite anti-heroines, “maybe this time I’ll win.”

Wabi-Sabi
No music this Monday. I wrote this thing, and against my usual instinct that I developed, which is to keep the deepest parts of me out of the eyes of strangers whenever I can, I wanted to actually share it. I used to be so open, and now it's so hard to get me to share more than the superficial. Maybe it's just that, before, I was nothing but superficial.
Wabi-Sabi
Nothing is perfect,
Nothing is finished,
And nothing lasts.
That’s why it’s beautiful,
That burning
Tugging
Heart-hurt of remembering
Your fingers tangled in my hair,
Your lips on my shoulder,
Not breathing
For fear of breaking the way the air crackled
And living tears hovered in hundreds of eyes
As we finished the song,
“I’m not sorry I met you,
I’m not sorry it’s over,
I’m not sorry there’s nothing to save…”
The quiet completeness of moments,
Trying hard to press into my memory
The way your eyes move under their lids
While you dream in the almost-dawn.
I try to remember these things,
Just as hard as I try to forget how much I don’t want you to go.
It’s easy to wish we could stay here
Wrapped up like a cocoon
In cool, green, flowing lines.
But to never hatch,
To never fly,
To hold you here would be the height of cruelty.
And I’ll lay my scarred, shy body
Naked beneath your gaze a hundred times,
But I’d die before I let you see these words:
You only need to ask, and I would follow you
To the coldest, harshest corners of the world,
And the fact that you would never
Just lodges you deeper in my chest.
And however long before the cocoon breaks,
It will be too soon.
I hope the blue in the atmosphere you touch
Warms you, teaches you, satisfies you,
And brings you loves far greater than mine.
I hope you treat well
The chunks of me that you will keep
When we reach our separate paths.

Music Monday: I'm Just Me
So, I went on Thursday night to see Stars, California Wives, and Diamond Rings at the Egyptian Room. Stars are absolutely my favorite, favorite, favorite band ever. I could listen to their discography on repeat for days. They didn't disappoint. Far from! In fact, I'd say it was more of an experience than a mere show. My friend, Tony, was there with me, and we were that funny overly-physically-affectionate couple. Even though we're totes not a thing. Stars is just the ultimate music to have on for cuddling, kissy moments. "It sounds like sentimentality and nostalgia" is the way Tony described it. And I mean. I'm still in awe. I was close enough to the stage, I could have touched Chris or Torquil. Every single musician in the band has so much intensity. And when Torquil and Amy put their microphones out and had the audience finish "Your Ex Lover is Dead" for them? I was teary-eyed. I'm not even ashamed to say it. It was one of those moments so beautiful, you're afraid to move or speak or even breathe, you so badly don't want to break the magic of it.
This post is about Diamond Rings, though. The dude's a force to be reckoned with.

And such a sweetheart too! His new album, Free Dimensional, comes out on October 23rd. And since Tony and I are both apparently in love with him now or something, this week's Music Monday shall be dedicated to his most recent single, "I'm Just Me."
Thanks, all three bands, for showing Indy a fantastic time Thursday night. And thanks to My Old Kentucky Blog for having them on at the Egyptian Room.

Music Monday: Don't dream it, be it!
In honor of the Rocky Horror Picture Show this past Friday. Photos at the SMG Evansville facebook page . Everyone had a seriously wicked good time! It was nothing short of tragic that Mesker Amphitheatre was closed, because it's just not the same. But it was nice being indoors. Freezing your tail off in fishnets for several hours gets a bit taxing.
Hot patootie, bless my soul:
